Jeremy Makin’s journey into the fitness industry began through an unlikely source—his work as an air medical helicopter pilot. While helping patients in emergency situations, Jeremy witnessed firsthand the consequences of neglecting one’s health and came to understand that the key to avoiding the worst outcomes is an active focus on healthy diet and exercise habits. Inspired to make a positive impact in his community, Jeremy decided to open Yuba City Fit Body Boot Camp to empower clients to take control of their fitness and live healthier lives.

When Jeremy opened his fitness center, he dreamed of creating a fitness community for busy moms, working professionals, and anyone seeking a healthier life. He and his team thought of an ideal client whom they referred to as “Mrs. Jones.” Mrs. Jones represented a busy mom who struggled to prioritize her health and had tried other gyms but felt intimidated or uninspired. Jeremy knew clients like Mrs. Jones existed, but connecting with them proved difficult.

Jeremy connected with the Sacramento Valley SBDC, which provided comprehensive guidance on business planning, licensing, insurance, and financial management. The SBDC’s one-on-one advising allowed Jeremy to launch Fit Body Boot Camp from a place of confidence and compliance, while training on financial management using QuickBooks prepared him to successfully apply for funding.

“Starting a business can be daunting, but the SBDC provided invaluable guidance and resources,” shared Jeremy. “Their expertise in business planning, marketing, and financial management was instrumental in getting Fit Body Boot Camp off the ground.”

The breakthrough came when Jeremy and his team realized that people like “Mrs. Jones” weren’t just looking for a gym, they were looking for a community. The Fit Body team pivoted their focus to building what they called the “Fit Body Family,” creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, emphasizing teamwork, camaraderie, and celebrating victories.

“We created a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone feels valued,” explained Jeremy. “We emphasized teamwork, camaraderie, and celebrating victories. And guess what? Mrs. Jones found us! The quick workouts fit her busy schedule, and the supportive community gave her the motivation she needed. She found a place where she belonged, where she could become her best self.”

With the SBDC’s support, Jeremy successfully launched Fit Body Boot Camp Yuba City and built a thriving fitness community that exceeded initial membership goals and continues to see steady growth. With guidance from their SBDC advisor on the loan application process, Fit Body Boot Camp Yuba City received a significant capital infusion of $424,000 from First Bank of the Lake.

Today, Fit Body Boot Camp Yuba City operates as a results-driven fitness community that provides high-energy workouts, personalized coaching, and a supportive atmosphere through a subscription-based model. Jeremy’s vision of empowering people to live healthier, more vibrant lives has become reality through the intentionally inclusive culture that helps clients like “Mrs. Jones” flourish.
